Actress Paula Patton and R&B singer Robin Thicke have announced that they are separating, according to a report produced by the Associated Press. In a joint statement, the couple explained that they will “always love each other and be best friends” but that they mutually decided to go their separate ways.

It does not appear as if any divorce pleadings have been filed. This could be a sign that they haven’t actually decided to divorce, or that a joint filing may be forthcoming. It is not uncommon for couples (who have decided that they no longer want to be married) to work out the terms of their split before filing a joint petition. It is essentially a function of collaborative divorce that is a growing trend across the nation.

In the meantime, rumors abound as to what actually led to the split. Allegations of infidelity have dogged Thicke since his hit “Blurred Lines” made him an international star last summer. Prior to the mega-hit, he had a modest career. At the same time, Patton had developed a body of work on the silver screen, with roles in “Déjà vu,” Lee Daniels’ “Precious,” “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” and the recent remake of “About Last Night.”

The couple has one child from their marriage who was born in 2010. No details have been released regarding custody or parenting time agreements. We hope that given their history together (they have known each other since high school) that they will reach an amicable agreement on this issue.
